21-Sep-2010 Budget airline Jetstar is to offer Apple iPads as part of its in-flight entertainment from later on this month.
Jetstar said that the iPad will be distributed
to passengers on “selected domestic routes” across Australia. In
practice, this means flights that last over one-and-a-half hours,
meaning that the popular Sydney to Melbourne route won’t feature the
iPad.
Passengers wishing to use the iPad will have
to pay $10. In return, they will be handed the device, which will have
movies, TV programs, eBooks and music uploaded to it.
Jetstar said that the iPads will be
distributed in a similar way to its exisiting in-flight entertainment,
in which headphones are handed out by cabin staff to passengers.
The airline said it was “one of the first” carriers in the world to offer iPads to passengers.
Bruce Buchanan, CEO of Jetstar, said: "We are
really excited to commence the trial of the iPads, as we're always
looking for ways to enhance our customer's Jetstar experience.
"Given the demand for the iPad so far, I anticipate it will have strong appeal amongst our passengers.
"In addition to offering low fares, great
customer service and more choice, it's important that we can provide the
latest in innovative technology to entertain our customers on board.
"Based on demand for the iPads as part of the
trial, we'll be looking to roll out the devices across our entire
domestic and international network later in the year.”
