Augmented Reality is becoming a Reality for Your Business

If you have not heard of augmented reality (AR), or its applications in marketing, then its time to be seriously blown away by its coolness. AR is an engaging way of combining live video with computer-generated data and visualizations. In essence it is the overlaying of data over the real world.

AR may be a cutting edge technology right now, but it has already started creeping into the marketing campaigns of the big brands which means it is only a matter of time before you could be using AR to promote your business.

Amazing things will happen in this space in the years to come, but what about today? Here are a few examples of AR to show you the very exciting possibilities of what lies ahead.

Augmented ID, by Swedish mobile firm TAT
This is a conceptual smart phone application that links face recognition software to social networking profiles.

Augmented Reality Business Card
With AR, business cards can contain more than just contact details. Watch James Alliban’s video to see his rich business card in action, and read his blog to try it out for yourself:

Layar: The Augmented Reality Browser
This application layers real time information over your camera display. So point your phone’s viewfinder down a street to find out information on all kinds of things, from real estate, to bars and restaurants, to historical / tourist information. Unfortunately, Layar is only available in the Netherlands.

SREngine for iPhone
This is pretty awesome... This prototype app determines information about your surroundings via image recognition. Don’t have time to go into a shop, simply point your phone at the shop window and be given a link to their website where you can buy online.

Augmented Reality in Marketing and Sales
You too could be promoting your products with AR in the near future. Here’s a showreel of a range of difference ways in which AR has been introduced into a sales and marketing environment:

Many of the world’s top brands have been experimenting with augmented reality lately. Read this Econsultancy blog and get ready to be impressed.

I hope this got you as excited as I am about the future of AR and how in years to come it will be used in mainstream business and day to day life.
